The Food Offering & Smoke Puja to the Triple Gem, Supreme Enlightened Beings and mother sentient beings traces its origins to the 8th century (775-779 AD), during the reign of King Trisong Detsen of Tibet, when Guru Rinpoche (Guru Padmasambhava, the Lotus Born) tamed demonic forces that stood in the way of the construction Samye Monastery, the very first Buddhist monastery in Tibet.

The ritual involves inviting noble guests such as Buddhas, Boddhisattavas and mother sentient beings to partake in this food offering and smoke puja.

The main effect of this ritual is to have participants accumulate merit and purify past aeons of negative karma. Not only will it assist in atoning for past offences we may have committed whether knowingly or unwittingly to spiritual beings in parallel or adjacent world systems who for this reason, harbour anger or hatred to us in view of such karmic debts, it brings the added benefit of cleansing the environment with perfumed and holy scents which will go a long way to repaying the karmic debts of all other living beings.
