Dear Dharma friends
Most of you may be aware that in our Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the teachings and practices from the Sutras and the Tantras are regarded as equally important. The former i.e. the Sutras contain the teachings of the historical Buddha that guide us in the pursuit of the causal path to liberation, whilst the latter are the esoteric teachings of Buddha that are believed to have been given to select individuals when the Buddha manifested in His tantric form, Vajradhara. These teachings were subsequently recorded in the Tantras. The Tantric path, also known as the resultant path, can, if mastered, enable the practitioner to attain enlightenment in this very lifetime.
The esoteric teachings in the Tantras in our Gelugpa tradition have been preserved for some 600 years in two tantric colleges, namely Gyudmed Tantric University (which our kind resident teacher Geshe Lama Konchok is an alumnus of) and Gyuto Tantric University. They are sometimes referred to as the Lower Tantric College and Upper Tantric College – the terms “Lower” (Chi:下密院)and “Upper” (Chi:上密院) describe their geographical location by reference to each other in their original site in Lhasa, Tibet. The curriculum at these Colleges focuses on training of monks in the tantras.
There is now an ongoing drive by Geshela’s alma mater, Gyudmed Tantric University, to undertake the mammoth task of collating and publishing the entire corpus of the tantras known to the community. These will become part of their first ever library collection which will be instrumental in preserving the Tantric tradition in its purest form. In conjunction with this, the Gyudmed Library has reached out to us here, asking if we might be able to assist them with this exercise – see the letter below.
The funds received will be meticulously documented, and we believe that this is an excellent opportunity to accumulate vast merits – as the letter from the Gyudmed says, all benefactors will automatically benefit from a name dedication service that entails dedication of merits to all of you whenever the daily tantric invocations and prayers are conducted at Gyudmed!
We rejoice in your contributions – no contribution is too small. Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us at the Centre or for that matter, the Gyudmed Library directly, if preferred.
May all of you be well and happy.
The Maha Tare Team
