Meaning & Purpose of Puja

‘Puja’ in Sanskrit, means ‘to honour, worship and devotional attention” usually done through a ceremony in which prayers and offerings are made to Buddhas and mediation deities to request for their blessings.

In the tantric tradition, there are numerous pujas that are performed to serve different purposes. In the monastery, monks perform pujas for long and healthy life of their teachers and for the accumulation of merits for the benefit of all sentient beings. Pujas are also performed to serve other purposes such as to remove obstacles and negativities, for the sick for speedy recovery from illnesses, for the deceased for better rebirths, for success and good fortune, or to pacify nagas and to remove naga-related illnesses/obstacles, to ward off harms and jinx caused by spirits, for quick achievement of goals and some are for good health and long life.
