This life-saving ritual involves buying live fish from fish farm and releasing them in their natural habitat. It was customary in many Buddhist countries to buy animals and set them free. However, given the constraints of rules and regulations enforced in cities and urban areas, people mostly observe the practice of buying fish and aquatic animals in great number and setting them free in the river, lakes, seas and oceans.

Saving lives of sentient beings, such as animals from slaughterhouses, is considered one of the most meritorious deeds, as nothing is as precious as ‘life’ for anyone irrespectively. Buddhist Sutra strongly exhort devout practitioners to engage in this noble deed, which bear many great Karmic fruits including long life in this and future rebirths.
It is also considered advisable to invoke, and pray and recite mantras of Buddha Amitayu, Buddha Vijaya and Goddess White Tara, who are together considered the “Three Buddhas of Longevity”.
