Medicine Buddha Bhaishajyaguru, or more popularly ‘Medicine Buddha,’ is the Buddha of medicine and healing who dwells in the pure Buddha realm called ‘the Land of Lapis Lazuli’ in the East. Seated and wearing the three robes of a Buddhist monk, his body emanates the aura of blue lapis lazuli, and he holds a vase of medicine nectar in his left hand and a Myrobalan stem in his right. Acclaimed by Buddha Shakyamuni in the Sutra of the Medicine Buddha, the Medicine Buddha popularly emanates in eight great manifestations. The Medicine Buddha is widely known for his twelve great vows, which includes his pledges to “bring relief and provide help to all sentient beings, who are afflicted with various illnesses; and are poor, miserable, and without help, companion, physicians, medicine, family, and home.” Initiation is a Tantric ritual where a vajra-master grants special permission and blesses the body, speech and mind of the practitioners enabling them to follow the teachings and practices relating to the Medicine Buddha. It includes oral transmission of the Medicine Buddha mantra, as well as chants relating to healing sickness, purification of bad Karmas, and ensure longevity and good health.
