100 Million Avalokiteshvara Mantra Recitation Retreat 2015, 5 & 6 Sep 2015

100M_Avalokiteshvara_PosterMaha Tare Buddhist Centre takes the immense pleasure of announcing its deeply cherished plans to organize a mass prayer ceremony for recitation of six-syllable Avalokiteshvara mantra—Om ma ni pad me hung—one hundred million times. Scheduled on 5 and 6 September 2015, the mass prayer is planned to facilitate collective accumulation of merits in order to ensure peace, harmony and prosperity in the region and the world at large, and to create an atmosphere conducive to the cultivation of compassion through mass chanting and group meditation.

Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara; and Six-syllable mantra and its benefits

Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara (Tib. Chenrezig), according to the Mahayana tradition, embodies compassion of all Buddhas. Worshipped as Guanyin in the Chinese Buddhist tradition, Avalokiteshvara is a bodhisattva, who postponed his own attainment of Buddhahood in order to free every single sentient being from the miserable states of Samsara and to lead them to the joyous states of Nirvana. His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama of Tibet is looked upon as a living emanation of this selfless bodhisattva.

The mantra of Avalokiteshvara—Om ma ni pad me hung—has a mnemonic effect and contains the unequalled power of compassion. The mantra is employed in highly sophisticated visualizations and meditations in the Buddhist Tantra tradition. Widely referred to as “the six-syllable mantra”, it is the most common prayer uttered by millions of devout Buddhists across the Himalayas including Tibet, Mongolia, Bhutan, Sikkim, Ladakh, and parts of India and China.

The benefits of reciting Avalokiteshvara mantra are manifold. It condenses the essential qualities of compassion of all Buddhas; brings peace, harmony and tranquility in the land; provides happiness, joy and contentment to all sentient beings; purifies negative Karmic actions and deluded states of mind; provides peace and calmness in life and through the stages of dying; prevents one from falling into the hell, hungry ghost or animals realms; ensures rebirth in the higher states of Samsara and eventually in the pure land of Buddha Amitabha; will help in the cultivation of compassion and the altruistic spirit for enlightenment; and finally help one complete the spiritual paths and grounds to actualize the unsurpassed state of enlightenment.

Off-site Jungwa Ritual

Jungwa ritual is a special Tantric ritual aimed at eradication of all obstacles that block the path of our deceased parents, relatives, friends and other sentient beings. It helps clear the path of release for those deceased beings, whose spirits are languishing in some unfavorable and lesser states of Samsara. The ritual involves series of Tantric visualization and transformation and burning of photos or belongings of the deceased person to provide them complete release from their dead states and find paths leading to Nirvana. Performed off-site immediately after the mass Avalokiteshvara mantra recitation, guests can bring photos or small/simple belongings of your deceased members of their family for the ritual. This does not constitute a part of the mass mantra recitation nor is it mandatory for anyone attending the recitation ceremony.
