Water Offering to Jambhala Statue
The legend was said that while Sakyamuni Buddha was giving the teaching of the Maha Prajna-Paramita Sutra, Devadatta came to interrupt by throwing rocks at the Buddha.
The Jambhalas appeared in front of the Buddha to shield him from the fallen rocks. The rocks hit and injured the White and Yellow Jambhalas on the head and Black Jambhala on the stomach. The Buddha healed the Jambhalas by blessing them with white holy nectar that came from his hand. The Jambhalas felt blissful and bowed to thank the Buddha.
The Buddha then said to Jambhala, “As I have healed you with this holy nectar, in the future if any of my students or student’s students who invokes your power and pours water onto you – bestow on them wealth, give them the two types of wealth, material wealth and spiritual wealth, more importantly spiritual wealth.” After that, Jambhala folded his hands and said, “I will do as you have said and I promise that I will do that.
This story has become the basis for practitioners of Jambhala Puja to pour water over Jambhala statue.
